At Victoriano, we believe in the value of teaching foundational behaviors that lead to a strong sense of character. Each month our students focus on a new character trait and communicate their understanding of these traits in writing. This monthly writing contest allows our classroom teachers to integrate character education with grade level writing standards in the areas of written conventions, writing strategies, and writing applications. Please join us in celebrating the students recognized below for their winning essays and poems, and their understanding of the importance of being a positive role model. |

Alertness (Ready to Learn) Constantly observing with an open mind. Eager to learn and improve.
Character Trait - Alertness Andrew Seo, 5th grade
A person with alertness can always be ready. However, a person without alertness will likely be unprepared and will probably not do their assignments correctly. Alertness is when you are listening and observing. Alertness is important because it shows readiness and is very helpful in everything you do. First, one way to show that you have alertness is to be ready to learn each day. When you come to school, bring your materials and pay attention in class. At the end of the day you can show alertness by writing down the homework so you won’t make mistakes and return the incorrect homework. Also, if you play sports, you should listen to the coach for any advice he gives about the drills. Second, another way to show alertness is to constantly observe with an open mind. When your teacher tells you to do an assignment you should be observant so you get the assignment done right. If for some reason you don’t know the assignment, you can observe other people, but be careful not to cheat! It is very important that you constantly observe what is going on around you.
The last way to show alertness is to be eager to learn. When you don’t know something, you should always put your best effort forward to learn what you don’t know. This applies to sports as well as the classroom. If you missed questions, or made mistakes on a test it is best to review those questions so that you learn the correct answers for next time.
In all, alertness is helpful and important because you can use it at school and in everyday life. So, stay alert and be ready!
