School Profile

Avalon Elementary School is nestled in the valley surrounded by the mountains and Lake Perris.  We are one of twenty schools in the Val Verde Unified School District.  Operating on a traditional school calendar, Avalon Elementary School serves over 750 students grades kindergarten through fifth.  Avalon Elementary School opened its doors in 2005 and rolled out the red carpet to a group of eager and excited students and their parents.

School Programs and Practices that Promote

a Positive Learning Environment

Our principal, Dr. Marilyn Lezine, leads a highly qualified and professional staff in offering an educational program designed to meet the needs of all students.  Rigorous academics and a warm, positive environment ensure students are given the best opportunity to learn and achieve.  All school components, including curriculum, instruction, and assessment, staff development and training, leadership opportunities, parent involvement, school climate, and extracurricular activities contribute to an environment where there is a focus on student achievement.  We utilize a number of approaches to address student needs:

  • Vocabulary enrichment for all curricular areas
  • Higher-order thinking skills
  • Multiple Intelligences
  • Learning Styles

Student achievement is accelerated through a commitment to direct instruction, based on the state's Content Standards and effective instructional practices and strategies.  Content standards define what all students should know and be able to do throughout their educational experience.  Teachers post their daily objectives on the board and involve all students in learning through active participation techniques.  Avalon students have far exceeded the state's expectations on the STAR Assessment as measured by the California Academic Performance Index (API), as well as the federal government's expectations by their Annual Yearly Progress (AYP).

Students have the opportunity to earn Principal's Honor Roll or Falcon Honor Roll at academic wards ceremonies held at the end of each trimester.  Please look for proud parents displaying the bumper stickers.  Avalon teachers have received training in planning lessons which address content standards.  Students are assessed through daily work assignments, district assessment, and grade level tests to assure they are making steady progress toward mastery.

College Bound Program

All Avalon students are focused on going to college.  Avalon encourages the development of college and professional career goals.  Our continued growth as a professional learning community is committed to academic excellence that is shared by our students, staff, and parents.  Every child has the potential to achieve academic success and as a team administrators, parents, teachers, and support providers possess the keys necessary to unlock that success.

Avalon has created comprehensive ways to promote college readiness for all students beginning at kindergarten.  We need every student, parent, and staff member to embrace and support this endeavor.  From kindergarten to college students must be engaged in meaningful learning.  Avalon students know their graduation date from college.  This date is four years after their high school date.  The date is on every student's school shirt.
